Nine major companies are in consulting with the Carbon Trust and BSI British standards to come up with a draft foot-printing standard. Among the government funded initiative are the companies: Cadbury Schweppes, The Co-op, Halifax, Scottish and Newcastle and Kimberly- Clark. Walkers Crisps already carry a prototype label.

“Dear Maria, I’ve been hearing the term “carbon neutral” very often in big companies’ marketing marketing material – I just wanted to understand it a bit better. First off, what is carbon neutrality and is there such a thing? Can companies use it as a badge for being green, while aggressively pursuing market share? It does seem somewhat paradoxical. - Mary”

…the UK’s liberal democrat Party has their way. The party has backed a radical series of ideas to fight global warming, even suggesting that petrol powered cars should be banned by 2040.

Arctic ice melt uncovers legendary sea route that connects Europe and Asia.
September 17, 2007
Explorers have searched for it for centuries and failed. However, it seems that now the Northwest Passage – a legendary sea route that connects Europe and Asia has been uncovered by one of the most unlikely culprits. No not archeologists, not scientists, not explorers, but our malignant little friend: global warming.

The discovery was revealed by satellite images from the European Space Agency. These are snapshots of the devastation that global warming has inflicted on the northerly latitudes. This summer alone, scientists by Leif Toudal Pedersen of the Danish National Space Centre discovered that one million more square kilometers of ice melted in the ocean than last year. This is shocking considering that for the past 10 years Arctic ice has been disappearing at an average rate of
GM Crops only way for India to feed itself, says government
September 17, 2007
Last week we reported on the potentially negative effects of using genetically modified crops. However, it seems that a large scale cultivation of transgenic crops may be the only solution to India’s fast growing food and land issues according to Mangala Rai, secretary of the Department of Agriculture Research and Education.

In an international conference Mr Rai, said that the production of food from less land would be achieved only through the widespread use of GM crops, stating that “self-sufficiency in food is crucial and the only way to ensure that is to adopt the GM technology. There cannot be two views on the issue.” The official added that “whether we like it or not

UK households spend hundreds of pounds every year on chemical cleaning products. Many are bad for the environment and your health, as well as being expensive to buy.
Chlorine-based products such as bleaches and detergents transfer the chlorine into the atmosphere when used, as anyone who’s ever been overcome by acrid fumes while bleaching the toilet bowl will know. The chlorine molecules released are known to be a growing contributor to the depletion of the ozone layer.
There are a number of natural alternatives to chemical products that are both safer and

Let’s all go for a grey whale hunt…or not.
September 13, 2007
A new scientific study has revealed that the population of Grey whales has decreased by as much as five times in the Pacific from 118,000 to 76,000.
