Three extraordinary photographs from the Hubble Heritage Project reveal star formation in compelling, multi-colored beauty, while continuing to advance our understanding of space. As we set out to explore the intricacies of these telescopic images, stand by to be awestruck at the majesty of the universe.

Let's take a closer look as the atmosphere and ring system of Cronos, properly known as Saturn. The instruments on the Cassini spacecraft collect data at multiple wavelengths – infrared, ultraviolet and visual. Our understanding of the complexity and dynamic activity in Saturn's atmosphere and ring system has thereby been dramatically enlarged, and our sense of wonder immeasurably increased.

On February 24, 2009, four of Saturn's moons transited the planet. A fortuitous line of sight allowed the Cassini spacecraft to capture Dione, Enceladus, Mimas and Titan in a single, extraordinary photograph. Remarkable space probe data allow us to better understand this dynamic and complex planet.

Surely everyone agrees. Electricity pylons or transmission towers are terribly unsightly constructions at the best of times. Maybe the Australians say it best, calling them Iron Men, but that gives each cloned metallic colossus a rather too human aspect. All the same, architects Arphenotype are looking to change such preconceptions with their newly envisaged design for a power transmission network in Iceland.

The most massive explosion ever recorded anywhere in the universe, occurred sometime after September 15, 2008. 12.2 billion light years from earth, a super massive star exploded and then possibly imploded to a black hole. Incredibly intense gamma ray radiation was released, traveled across space and time to be recorded by the GLAST research satellite.

What do Marjorie, the all-knowing, all seeing Trash Heap of Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock and the Internet have in common? Well, apparently a great deal. According to some, as an omnipotent collector of information and connecter of millions of routers and billions of individual entities, the Internet could be a sentient being. Find out more before you chuck the theory in the trash…

Black Holes have been confirmed by the tens of thousands throughout the universe. Often located at the center of large galaxies, they power star formation and are the most spectacular example of a 'singularity' - an object where the laws of nature as we understand them do not apply.

From a giant asteroid impact to a massive volcanic eruption, the threat of a mass extinction event looms over our heads like a sword of Damocles of earth-shattering proportions. However, a new study into catastrophic catalysts for mass extinction suggests that more than one kind of mega-event is needed to stand a decent chance of wiping out life on the planet.

The Crab Nebula in Taurus has been photographed at several wave lengths and the images are spectacular. At the center, a rapidly rotating neutron star continuously emits two immensely strong radiation beams in rapid pulses. Join us on a journey of discovery to learn about this amazing cosmic phenomenon.
