Every summer it seems, I find myself unable to root out the sunglasses I purchased for an arm and a leg the year prior; a ritual that has over time, moved my style from $120 Ray-Bans to $10 gas station glasses. Imagine my surprise when I found out that this was probably going to kill me, and that nobody was doing anything about it.

I’m a bit of an artsy sort: the furniture in my apartment, the art on the walls, heck, the apartment itself, all have a feel that I wanted to intentionally surround myself with, and that feel is “creative.” It’s part of the reason why I enjoy telecommuting so much, and why I am so effing psyched to find out you can make furniture out of shredded paper.

I’ve said it before, I’ve proved it, and I’ll say it again: the way to break an addiction to fossil fuel is to make it prohibitively expensive. Until that happens, very few people have the impetus to change their lifestyles significantly and politicians therefore, will have very little incentive to sponsor progressive legislation.

Recycling is often such a boring and easy task that it’s hard to get people to change their ways, in order to make them do it. I know, it sounds like a pitch you’d make to a grade-schooler. But here are seven ways to make recycling a visible impact instead of an additional hassle when you’re going to the trash bin.

As John McCain and Hillary Clinton tell Americans tales of a gas tax holiday to relieve us of a whole 20 cents per gallon this summer (we’re paying more than four dollars anyway) it’s probably worth discussing one of the other reasons that gas is so darn expensive…

There’s a program in the U.S. called Energy Star– it certifies homes and appliances for cutting their energy consumption anywhere from 15 to 40%. I don’t think they expected it, but we may have found the first entire city that qualifies: Juneau, Alaska, cut power consumption by 30-40% this month.

It’s a cliché… almost. A celebrity criticizes the way that the rest of us impact the environment by living in 500 square foot apartments and driving a car that we wish somebody would steal, and then flies off to some exotic location in a private jet that dumps more carbon into the atmosphere in a day that I can in a year.

I imagine that our readers in the UK are giggling furiously at the American panic over gas prices this year as we finally begin to think about paying what those of you in the old world have been for years.

Well, then let me drop a number that will make the Americans euphoric, and probably plunge the rest of you into shock: you can fill up your entire tank for five dollars in
