One has to wonder what exactly Asia has done to anger the violent Old Testament God recently, as the damage from Cyclone Nargis and now the 7.8 magnitude earthquake striking China have left the continent stretched to the breaking point.

There’s been “much ado” about China this year: the Beijing torch has been met with protests nearly everywhere it toured, and politicians have toyed with the idea of treating the games as a referendum on the human rights violations within the emerging superpower.

As the death toll from the terrible cyclone that struck Myanmar climbs past 100,000, I keep thinking of the press conference that was held at the White House on Monday. Ebay has had a lot of strange items on it over the years–I’ve seen a man’s soul in a jar, the rights to tattoo an ad on somebody’s forehead, even a creepily nondescript posting labeled “my virginity.” This however, might be both the strangest abstract item I’ve seen and an item that has a tangible return: buying the ozone hole online will make you the sponsor of theozonehole.com for one year.

Environmental Graffiti is, of course, the site for environmentalists who don’t take themselves too seriously. Aside from going on at PETA every once in a while, we’re happy to spread urban legends and make jokes about pot. Unfortunately, something happened over the weekend that was so cataclysmic that we simply couldn’t ignore it. A huge cyclone struck Myanmar, a small country in Southeast Asia, and killed nearly 4,000 people.

Anybody that saw the Kentucky Derby Saturday was treated to a spectacular race, and then immediately robbed of that memory with one of the most heartbreaking sights in racing. Eight Belles, the first filly running in the race since 1996, which having just turned in the best finish by a girl since Winning Colors, collapsed and broke both ankles shortly after finishing.
