It's Illegal to Sell Pot Flavored Candy In Georgia

4 years ago Environment

Oh, that wiley Georgia Legislature. You know it's a good story when the first question anybody asks when they hear about it is "was this an April fool?"

It's now the law in Georgia, you may no longer sell pot-flavored candy to minors. The bill, which passed the senate 42-3, and was introduced by-- seriously, not an April Fool-- Doug Stoner, a Democrat from Smyrna, was passed by the house last year. The bill claims that the candy gives children the false impression that marijuana is safe, takes particular issue with the marketing claim that "every lick is like taking a hit."

A group of high school students, who presumably are against drugs because nobody has ever been friendly enough to offer them any, were rallying in support of the measure in the halls of the capitol while the measure was up for a floor vote, calling the oily candy bars and lollipops a "gateway candy" to drugs and a dangerous lifestyle.

I'm personally glad to see our war on drugs has extended down to the level where candies are being labeled as 'gateways'; sooner or later this means that the government is going to start doing things like banning dreadlocks and acoustic guitars, and requiring showers or all citizens, then we'll be able to really make progress.

do you lot know what the REAL fucking gateway drug is?? sugar. from the first time you grow teeth, you want sweets, aka, sugar (amongst other E-numbers and chemicals). you eat the thing, it tastes good, you want more, you develop a pyschological addiction. simple. chocolate, is a relaxant, which, if eaten enough can cause addiction, hence the invention of the name, choco-holic. its ironic that these kids think its the pot when its actually the candy, thats the gateway. so dont ANY of you non-drug supporting fucks say ANYTHING to me about cannabis (draw where im from) being a fucking gateway drug. it's just not. it doesn't even kill people. like alcohol and cigarettes. go ahead, ban everything, then realise, you still have the route of the problem to deal with. people doing fucked up shit to each other, drugs are simply catalysts. my 2000 cents rite there.

Making something illegal does not control its use, just like banning handguns doesnt stop people from acquiring them or even making some sort of rudimentry fire arm from a peice of wood and a pipe. If someone is going to do something a law is not going to stop them. US is not the land of the free its just a catch phrase like "every lick is like taking a hit" it sounds like it would be great to consume some of that great ol' american freedom. Not to say a nation of laws is a bad thing, just make sure the laws are about protecting individuals from perpetrators. Not individuals from themselves. If depression is something against oneself are you going to make that illegal too ? Americans need education, for years they've been dumbed down. Sorry those who do not feel this way but i tell you now you are being cheated.

Pot is illegal because of Tobacco, Alcohol and most importantly, Big Pharmaceutical companies lobbying billions of dollars annually to keep it illegal. Not to mention Nixon's 'war on drugs', which is about as retarded as Bush's 'war on terror'. The fact is, both of these things will exist. They tried alcohol prohibition, and it led to the rise of the Mob, killing of countless civilians, and bootlegging. The same thing goes on with pot/other illicit substances. The thing I can't stand is the commercials that the Office of National Drug Control Policy puts out, stating that "Smoking marijuana helps terrorists"--- NO you jackass! Marijuana prohibition helps terrorists, by creating a black market for a completely natural substance, that could be regulated, taxed, and actually has positive mental health benefits. I have been smoking for 9 years now, and graduated from The University of Texas in 3 years. It does not make people stupid-- the ones who are, were born that way. It does not make people lazy-- again, the ones that are, were born that way. We need to rid this country of the Puritanical fucks that want to impose their primitive belief system on the rest of us.

I think it makes sense though. Pot Culture has become too popular in our society. I understand it’s just candy, but why not call it something else? why must it stand for a representation of pot smoking when it is obviously illegal as well. They could name is something else, ands they don’t have to market with a saying such as “Every lick is like taking a hit.” They could simple have named it something else that didn’t even pertain to the illegal drug. They called it a Gateway candy because the candy they are selling is spreading pot culture among the youth. They won’t attack snickers any time soon, Trust me.
Pot is less harmful than the manufactured tobacco products that for some reason (*cough cough tax revenue and lobbying and big gifts to politicians*) ARE still legal. IF they ban a pot flavored candy, they need to ban smoking tobacco as well.

ANON420: No, that's wrong. Tobacco companies aren't targeting minors with 'drug flavored tobacco.' You may have had a point if there were advertisements from these tobacco companies that were targeted towards children. But a little off the defense, this isn't an action of a police state, simply just trying to keep our children from growing up to be drug-addicted zombies. People do drugs, it's common. I'm not against that. It's when people are so god damn blinded by what is truly wrong in society today. Christ, are you truly that stupid? I don't do drugs, but everyone really has had their day, so to speak. I'm not against drugs like I said, but when such advertisements are solely aiming towards our younger generations, I think they had a right in banning it. I don't want to hear the argument, that pot is less harmful, this, that, and the other thing. Most people who smoke pot, smoke cigarettes. Large majority of people who smoke cigarettes drink alcohol. lkgsetmnfg I don't understand how people can be so stupid.

I think the only gateway these candies are, is a gateway to obesity. alcohol and tobacco are much better gateways to other harder drugs.
