Chrysler Crashing into an Environmental Pothole

Business/Politics

The US congress’ plans to legislate against gas guzzlers are having an effect on the automobile industry before it even passes into law. Chrysler, America’s largest car manufacturer has announced that they are to shelve plans to develop a new luxury sedan model, as the legislation could render the car unaffordable.

Democrats in congress announced plans earlier this year to introduce new regulations that would force car makers to increase the fuel efficiency of their vehicles. This follows increasing concern over the automobile industry’s contribution to global warming and what could be interpreted as an irresponsible attitude towards carbon dioxide emissions.

American car manufacturers are also being driven to develop more efficient cars by record oil prices. This has led to steep rises in the cost of gas, hitting American consumers and driving up inflation.
