2 words will define the problem, and 2 words will find the solution: 1) OVER POPULATION 2) BIRTH CONTROL.
Our resources are not finite. Sadly, capitalism and market theory is based on growth, and this includes growth in population to push growth in consumption to
feed growth in corporations and thus, profits. It's unsustainable, so why call it what it is: A failed human
experiment.

The rise in biofuel prices can not increase food prices. First of all the biofuel blend is only upto 15 percent approved all over the world. Second, not all countries use the same energy level as that of developed countries. For instance an average Indian uses energy of 700 kgs of oil equivalent per year while a US Citizen uses energy of 7000 kgs of oil equivalent. Obviously the impacts are very different. Also all countries do not have Flex Fuel Vehicles like Brazil has. For India, shift to biofuel, will benefit since there are large sugar stocks unsold, and sugar factories are unable to pay sugarcane farmers their dues. If these factories convert a portion of sugarcane to ethanol, at least farmers can be paid their dues. Hike in biofuel prices will never lead to rise in food prices in India because, most farmers have their household food security as first objective. And then they turn to market. At least for their home consumption, farmers will never deceive themselves. Thus, we cannot generalize that biofuel prices will lead to food prices all over.

Pat,
you're absolutely correct that the original sentence did not make clear where the riots had occurred and where they had been averted. I've edited the article to show this information more clearly, as well as include a few more examples. And while I agree "nearly" doesn't count in alot of life, keeping a mass of citizens from rioting after protests have gone angry does in this case I think help show the widespread effects of the rise in food prices.
