Can you imagine yourself surrounded by tons of deadly spiders, just for an hour? I hope not. But there is real life spider man Nick Le Souef in Melbourne, Australia, who has decided to live for three whole weeks with up to 1,000 deadly beasts.

Living, sleeping and doing all his work among these poisonous eight-legged creatures, Nick will be incarcerating himself in his Flinders Lane shop window from 15. November to 6. December to raise money for Variety, a children’s charity.

This year, the renowned opal miner is attempting to break his own record set 30 years ago. With a family history of adventure, Nick currently holds the following Australian records: habitation in a Snake pit (3 weeks), a shark tank (3 weeks) and a Red Back (black widow) spider cage (3 weeks).
Nick has been busy catching spiders for this event, with over 250 caught so far. Nick has planned to start his challenge accompanied by 400 spiders, some of which are as big as the palm of a human hand. Later on, more spiders will be brought in for his charity stint in Melbourne.

Surrounded by lethal redbacks, Nick says: “After being involved with the famous Bash and seeing the great work Variety do with special needs children across Australia, I couldn’t think of a better charity to put my life on the line for.”

Variety is a children’s charity that empowers children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs to live, laugh and learn. For supporting Nick and Variety, one can pledge online via www.gofundraise.com.au/spiderman.
After spending his first day, Nick wrote on Facebook: "End of the first spider day!!!! Seemed to go all over Australia!!! Hope Variety makes heaps - please donate!!! "Variety spiderman" should work!!!! Thanks!!"
So while Nick is out there, in a cage with spiders, spending his time cutting opals, replying to fan mails on the net and writing his memoirs, the world can watch him live here: http://www.variety.org.au/VIC/WHATS-ON/Spider-Man-Challenge/
My sincere thanks to Georgie Smith for sharing information and images for this event.
