The Prestes Maia is an abandoned highrise complex in São Paolo. In the 12 years since its abandonment, the building had become a home of filth and squalor, with crime, drugs and occasional loitering running rampant. In 2002, a group known as the Downtown Roofless Movement moved in to clean things up. For 4 years they lived and thrived in the Prestes Maia until the original owners decided to pay a few bills and take the building back.

A non-supercell tornado comes in many flavors: dust devils, dust tubes, and waterspouts, to name just a few. The basic difference is that these type of vortexes are not born of a larger storm system and appear only sporadically. Also, they do not seem to pose any real danger as there should be more arm flailing and/or opposite direction running – but as this photo shows, they're pretty awesome phenomena nonetheless.

The Saraha desert is the largest hot desert in the world. Spanning some 3.5 million square miles (9 million square km), this desert is almost as large as the United States and is expanding south at a rate of about 30 miles (48 km) per year. To help slow or even stop this expansion, scientists have proposed using a species of our microbial nemesis that turns ordinary sand into sandstone to construct a huge containing wall in the desert.

Imagine for a moment that you have a balloon above your head. In this balloon is the entire volume of air that has passed through your body to become the gaseous odorous ghost of your last two meals. Being a vegetarian with a high fiber intake, I can guarantee that I would be quite embarrassed at the sheer size of such a balloon (or proud, depending on current company).
